CANA RALLY, Saturday May 30, 2009

Brooklyn, 76*F; a mighty fine day for settling into a beer garden and getting on a session. It was also a mighty fine day for heading to the suburbs to play some netball.
MINC aren’t a part of the CANA league but we were invited to their season opening rally, we mustered one team and enjoyed a great day.

MINC got off to a great start defeating Typhoon 7-3. Captain’s return to the red polyester saw her bounce back in traditional form, the goals were a little rusty but she took her regulation dive early in the game. The highlight of this game occurred after the final siren with Biscuit getting funky doing flapjacks and other moves that are yet to be invented with a crazy dude marching to his own beat. She’s our Pres and we’re so proud.

Jess was pulling on the polyester for the first time and made a rookie’s error by making plans after the game. Clearly Jess was not yet familiar with netball on Island time. As it was Jess’ birthday dinner she was headed to and as she wasn’t aware of being available aaaaaaall day, we permitted her an early departure but did miss her running hard and strong in Centre. Jess took a few tumbles but bounced back and never let our opponents steal our centre passes, way to go Jess – phenomenal form in your first tournament, we look forward to more.

MINC had the novelty this tournament of having an actual, fully ensembled medical kit. Drinky (in very dramatic style) had the benefit of this kit and our unofficial medico, Lisa aka MASH who gave tender loving care to the gaping hole in Drinky’s knee. 27 stitches carefully executed saw Drinky able to take the court in the next game. Thanks MASH, super effort on the court as a strong and agile GA and a super effort in the first aid tent.

Gemma had a great day in her quietly aggressive style in WD chasing down loose balls and capitalizing on turn overs. Andrea got plenty of touches and taps against her often taller and bigger opponents in GK. Rebecca wore almost every bib throughout the day and still managed to host us for beers afterwards. Rebecca was a strong force in Defence and ran well at C once Jess departed. Caroline came into the rally a little late after having her car towed, Caroline’s height was a good addition to our defence end and she managed to work her recent terrorist training into the day, working in some combat roles and kidney  punches throughout. Biscuit coached throughout the day but did pull on her peg leg and play WA for one game; she fed like a demon and added great zest to the offence end. Drinky played a few roles throughout the day having a crack at GD, WD and her beloved C. Drinky’s long reach saw her grab many intercepts, her assistance bringing the ball down the court and providing back up support was consistent as ever.

MINC’s enthusiasm and good sportsmanship unfortunately wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard with us going down in several matches though we did, once again, earn Most Disciplined Team of the rally. Well done MINC, looks like we’re going to have a great summer of tournaments.
